Unico Zelo Esoterico 2020
£21.99
Unico Zelo is a small winery, run by the youthful Brendan and Laura Carter. Still only in their mid-twenties, this dynamic couple have been making wine under the Unico Zelo label for the last seven years, taking their inspiration from their intense passion for their native land.
The wines are crafted from varieties that require minimal intervention, both in the vineyard and the winery. The in-depth study of vineyard sites in South Australia has led them to focus on Italian varieties, such as Fiano and Nero d’Avola which are perfectly suited to being dry-farmed in the arid Riverland as well as Dolcetto, Nebbiolo and Barbera which flourish in the inland, continental climate of the Clare Valley.
These delicious and unique wines combine sustainability and drinkability to great effect.
An eclectic blend of Muscat d’Alessandria, Riesling and Bianco d’Alessano left on their skins for eight days, giving a delicious cloudy orange wine. It has a textured, waxy mouthfeel of ginger, orange and citrus, and ripe tannins.
One for the adventurous. Winemaker's Notes: "We've had a desire to create a wine like this for some time. In representation of a winemaking style that has existed for many millennia out of countries like Georgia, and influenced the styles of winemaking seen in Friuli, Sicily and Pantelleria. It's not exactly white wine, nor red - many call it Orange or Amber wine...but we like to call it Esoterico.
We make no additions of any kind - save for sulphur when we bottle the wine. There is no fining or filtration involved, with the wine allowed to clarify by gravity alone - resulting in a slight haze and sediment. This was one of the most enjoyable wines to craft, as there was no preconceived idea of what it must taste like - the chief driver was drinkability."
Tasting Note:
Primary aromas of mandarin peel, black tea and rosehip. Mouthwatering acidity and ‘say hello!’ tannins. It’s a Bohemian at heart.
Note:

The History of islington Wines
Islington Wine — A Neighbourhood Wine Venture with Heart
Born from the passion of two wine enthusiasts, Islington Wine is more than just a bottle shop. It is the result of five years of dreaming, planning, and sourcing with purpose. Our founders left their careers to create something that would bring people together, support sustainability, and celebrate the beauty of honest winemaking.
Every detail of Islington Wine reflects that vision. The space is thoughtfully designed with an organic, natural aesthetic and shelves filled with handpicked bottles from producers who care for their land as much as their craft. We call it wine design, a blend of taste, community, and creativity that turns every visit into an experience.
At Islington Wine, you will find not only distinctive wines but also a welcoming space built on connection, sustainability, and local spirit.
