This Grenache from the MMAD Vineyard is a standout example of McLaren Vale’s finest. A collaboration of talent from Martin Shaw, Michael Hill-Smith MW, Adam Wadewitz, and David LeMire MW, the vineyard was established in the high-elevation, cool climate of Blewitt Springs in early 2021. The 16.5-hectare site, rich in Maslin sands and underpinned by ironstone pebbles, benefits from cooling winds off the Gulf of St Vincent, creating ideal conditions for their Grenache, Shiraz, and Chenin Blanc. Farmed with organic principles, the MMAD vineyard boasts vines dating back to 1939, which bring depth and character to their wines. This second release Grenache, with 15% whole bunches and maturation in concrete and old French oak, unveils layers of dark red cherry, plum, and raspberry interwoven with nori, iodine, and sultry florals. Its tannins add structure, showing a rugged yet refined character, making this Grenache both compelling and a testament to McLaren Vale’s thrilling versatility and quality in Grenache.
