Valpolicella often suffers from a poor image due to the prevalence of poorly made versions, but when carefully selected, particularly a Classico DOP from better hillside sites, it can be a remarkable wine. The 2021 Valpolicella Ripasso from Guerrieri Rizzardi's Pojega vineyard exemplifies this, benefiting from a warm growing season that enhanced its richness and body. This vintage features a blend of 60% Corvina, 20% Corvinone, 10% Rondinella, and 10% Merlot, creating a complex wine with aromas of black cherries, ripe plums, and floral notes, balanced by high acidity and soft tannins. The Ripasso method, which involves refermenting the wine on Amarone grape skins, adds depth and intensity, making it a fuller, richer alternative to plain Valpolicella while maintaining a smooth and drinkable profile. This wine is a great value, with potential to develop further in the bottle, offering a concentrated and delightful experience reminiscent of the pricier Amarone.
