The Leoville-Poyferre is surprisingly backward and tight on the nose, contrasting with its usual expressive and generous nature in youth. While the precision and focus remain intact, the wine currently exhibits a broody and sultry character. The medium-bodied palate showcases a firm structure, indicating a shift from its opulent showing in barrel. Overall, this vintage presents a slightly more austere and masculine profile from Didier Cuvelier, though this observation is not a criticism. While I would appreciate a bit more persistence on the finish, the signs are promising for this mercurial and fascinating Leoville-Poyferre. I anticipate it will improve with bottle age, hence the plus sign against my score.
