Saint-Joseph offers up notions of alluring cocoa and tobacco notes, smoked herbs, olive, licorice and charcoal, as well as loads of sweet cassis and blackberry, steeped plum, boysenberry and raspberry fruit, that emerge with more time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, with notable purity of fruit, an unctuous, creamy texture, and serious length. The long, anise-edged finish has a nicely buried iron accent, but remains polished.
